High drama in Chesterfield tonight! First up, Dave won his game, which seemed quite brutal, judging by the number of pieces rapidly exiting the chess board. Next up, Rob won his game. Rob’s first match for our C team, well done Rob! So I’m sat there thinking it doesn’t get better than this as I look down at my own position, which seemed pretty darn good at the time. I also had a good time advantage on the clock. I was secretly confident of a win.

Time passed by and eventually Steve was knocked out. The score so far was 2-1 to us. I just needed a draw for our team to win.

It later turned out, I was actually winning, by some margin acording to Mr Stockfish (at one point it was +9.8). All credit to my worthy opponent for not losing his nerve, defending well, and eventually whittling away my advantage to a drawn game. James eventually offered me a draw, which I declined (oh the gasps and horror on the faces of Steve and Rob, there was even talk of my returning to Sheffield in the boot of Steve’s car, or getting the train back). I felt I could have won it, I felt I should have won, I felt because I was clearly winning at some point previously in the game, I should still be winning. Sadly that wasn’t the case, the game was at this point drawn, and after another couple of moves I could see no way to victory and a draw was agreed.

I massively enjoyed the game still, and again, all credit to James for hanging in there. Well played sir!
