The first match of 2020 for our C team; playing away vs Darnall & Handsworth. I was on board 2 playing black against Geoff Facer.
I felt our game was fairly even all the way through. An opportunity missed on move 43. 43 … Rd1 would have been better than 43 … Ng4, forcing the white King off the 1st rank, where it could be forked along with the black Rook (with 44 … Ng4). Time was running low for us both, and 44. g3 was an unfortunate blunder which lost the game for white.
I was seated next to board 1, and from time to time glanced across. I noticed the black Queen infiltrating white’s position, didn’t look good, and then later I noticed David had lost his Queen, oh no! Draws for Dave and Steve on boards 3 and 4 resulted in a drawn match.
Stay tuned, rematch next Monday at the Abbey!
