We returned to the New Barrack Tavern to face Hillsborough again in the league. Fortunately for us it was their D team rather than the C team who gave us a good beating at the start of the season.
Dave was first to finish, winning a quick game which I believe was a Smith-Morra gambit – Peter take note! Bill won his opponents queen, whilst Rob had battled back from a poor opening to win giving us a 3-0 lead. I can’t remember what Peter said about his game, but it was another win for us. I’d swapped pieces in the wrong order leaving me a pawn down which Luke steadily converted into a win. Danny had a real ding-dong battle with Paul. He looked to be easily winning, just looking for the knockout punch, but Paul found a cunning counter which put Danny on the back foot, in the end leading to his resignation.
Final score was 4-2 and after a couple of good team wins, we are now up to 3rd in the table.
You can tell from this link that I’ve been devoting considerable study to the Smith-Morra Gambit: https://bit.ly/38QPtPO! The captain can’t remember anything about my game because I didn’t tell him anything. The opening was very modern. It went back to Alekhine-Capablanca 1927: Game 34! 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Bg5 Nbd7 5.Nf3 c6 6.a3 Be7 7.e3 O-O 8.Bd3 dxc4 9.Bxc4 Nd5 10.Bxe7 Qxe7 11.O-O Nxc3 12.bxc3 e5 13.Be2 e4 14.Nd2 Nf6 15.Nc4 Nd5 16.Qc2 Bf5 17.Ne5 Qg5 18.Bc4 f6! wins a knight 19.f4 exf3 20.Nxf3 Bxc2 21.Nxg5 fxg5 22.Bxd5+ cxd5 23.Rac1 Be4 24.c4 Rxf1+ 25.Kxf1 Bd3+ 26.Kf2 Bxc4 27.e4… Read more »
