A good result for the team, and well needed given the current league table.
Steve was first to finish – unfortunately Phil was a little too Sharp(!) for him, gaining material in a complicated position. Oliver blundered a piece against me in the opening and after putting up a good fight, the material deficit proved too much. Peter, our Sicilian expert, played white against a Sicilian defence. Ed stole a pawn but this proved to be his downfall as his queen ended up being trapped later on. Good win for Peter, although not playing the Smith-Morra gambit earned him a reprimand from the captain! Bill was proving that not all rook and pawn endings are drawn, although having two or three additional pawns was a help. 3-1 up with two games still to go. Dave and Mick appeared to have an equal position and a draw was the final result giving us the match win. Danny’s bishops and rooks were dominating against Chris, but he was defending valiantly. Eventually a knight fork ended the resistance.
What an excellent report! I promise to study the Smith-Morra Gambit in assiduous detail!
