A good result against Chesterfield C this week, with a wins for Rob and Steve and a draw for me. Considering my recent losing streak, I was quite happy with a draw.
Here’s my game on board 2 with Brian Crofts. I felt sure I could have wangled something in the end game, being a pawn up, but even putting it through the computer after, didn’t reveal much, no missed wins or even decent advantages for black, revealed themselves.
Rob reports his attempt at the Giuoco Pianissimo turned into a surprisingly sharp game (although, as Ludek Pachman points out in his 1965 opus ‘open games’, this supposedly quiet opening can assume a rather unquiet form).
By all accounts, his rash optimistic attack was met by a counterattack involving a rampant black queen. Rob tells me he came up with a cunning plan that almost trapped the queen, won a piece and eventually the game.
