A-Team

A Team on tour part 2.

E-mail Print PDF

220px-nellie_dean_sheet_music_cover...And so to the Bridge Inn in Rotherham, formerly known as Nellie Dean's...A struggle to get a team but in the end there were some noble volunteers and we arrived with eight players against a team that have fought well this season but with scant reward.  We could not afford any upsets!  The first result in was Steve Moon who had to defend with Black against the London system.  It looks innocuous but can creep up and take you unawares.  Unfortunately lt this was what happened to our man but it was a difficult game to play.  I'm not sure about the order of the next results but Messrs Fletcher and Trafford took a total of 41 moves to win between them which must be some sort of record.  From where I was sitting, I saw Allan play BxP+, followed by a Queen check and the win of a Rook on a8.  That soon ended in our favour. Dave Cook won a good game in which he played sensibly and solidly and brought home the whole point.  That leaves Stuart, Shane and me.  Stuart was Black, won the exchange, and in spite of lengthy resistance on the part of his opponent, Andy Baxter, scored a good win.  I was winning for most of the game, tried to rush my opponent in his time trouble, turned down a draw, got a lost game, proposed a draw myself, was understandably turned down, produced a couple of ridiculous maoves that obviously did nothing for my opponent's blood pressure (or mine!), was offered another draw, said something about making a another move (I think), accepted a draw after he made a move that allowed mate in about eight moves! Oh woe!  While this pantomime was playing out, Shane was battling bravely and only just lost a game which fluctuated all the way through.  So 5.5 - 2.5 to us.  All ends happily and we return home to play Nomads A on Monday at home.

2. Allan Potts 1-0 M.Howard
3. Paul Fletcher 0-1 M.Johnson
4. Mark Allison  0-1 A.Mort
5. John Trafford ½-½ G.Halfpenny
6. Stuart Jones  0-1 S.Housley

8. Bill Ward  0-1 G.Peters
Ouch! is I suppose one possible reaction to this.  However, having read the sport pages of various quality newspapers for a number of years, my second reaction is that we can take a lot of positives away from this encounter!?  We got a very generous write up from Dave Latham on the Chesterfield site.  I really don't understand how he could manage very nearly to  beat Andrew and, also, keep an eye on everybody else's games.  I can't think of very much to add to what he says in his report, except to say that George's expression on meeting the Woodseats variation (I suspect for the first time) was a study to watch-almost as good as the youtube clip of Kasparov nearly falling off his chair playing Anand a very long time ago. It's worth searching for, if you've never seen it.  After having fought , nobly, but in vain against Martin Howard's English Opening when we played Chesterfield the other week, I thought Mark was a trife unlucky to come up against Andy Mort.  They play exactly the same openings!  Paul played very nobly for the team in turning down a draw, after the bottom boards had gone down.  I was a bit worried when my opponent said 'tasty' after I had made what I thought, for a while, was a good move.  I didn't know whether he wanted to eat me or play chess against me.  It could have worse but it could have been closer.  I missed chances of at least a draw and I'm sure there were similar opportunities on other boards.  So, the room was warm again this week, perhaps we ought to go back to being cold. Better for the intellect and all that stuff!  The match was played in an excellent spirit and the best team won.  Merry Christmas!

Nomads B v. Woodseats A. (Sheffield & District Chess League Division 1)

E-mail Print PDF
1. Paul Cumbers  0-1  Allan Potts
2. Andy George 0-1 Paul Fletcher
3. Milan Zpevak  ½-½ John Trafford
4. Mike Newett ½-½ Stuart Jones
5. Stuart Crosthwaite 1-0 Peter Hulse
6. Ken Dewhurst 0-1 Chern Yean Sim
7. Steve Withington 1-0 Bill Ward
8. Keith Davis 1-0 Shane Frith

So a drawn match.  In fact it was a very tense affair. For a change I'm not going to write about games which I didn't really see and make up stuff (which only spies from Nomads will read), except that after the match I heard that there had been a lot of pieces flying about on board 2,  I asked Ken Dewhurst how he felt after his game and he said 'rough' and the games on 3+4 were both hard fought contests.  Well, instead of that, here are some annotations, carried out it must be said with silicon assistance, which seem  to show to see that if we had taken our chances on the lower boards (especially the wretched captain), we would have won hands down! Return to the land of the Twisted Spire

There's a very good and fair report on the match on Chesterfield's website, so I don't know how much I can add, apart from emphasising that it was very close-run thing and everybody played well.  I lost the toss but Andrew still got White.  Dave Latham decided that, as he was going to lose anyway... a noble sacrifice but it meant more whites lower down.  Well, he did lose. I'd not seen Andrew play the English before.  Botvinnik's system seems to be fashionable again.  Allan won White's Queen-I know no more- and Paul had a mighty passed pawn and a great deal of pressure through out the game.  It was nearly mate but his opponent resigned just in time!I've seen Martin Howard play twice recently and he's very good at the English Opening as well!  He seems to know where the pieces go.  Mark resisted nobly but towards the end it must have been like playing against a boa constrictor!  Stuart himself said that he played a 'tired' game but, from where I was sitting, which was 'next door', after having lost a pawn in the opening, he seemed to put up a very resourceful defence.  Unfortunately his opponent found a way of converting his advantage into a winning endgame.  My game started as a 'Veresov'  and then turned into 'French'.  I'd expected another English Opening but it ended up with Andy Mort playing e4.  Very unusual!  There was a minor moment of panic when I played c5 and, having forgotten to castle first, realised that White could play Nd6+ and make my King move.  After having calmed down, and seen that it wasn't all that bad, it was very amusing to watch Andy's face as he decided what he was going to do.  In the end he didn't give check and a draw ensued when we both started to get short of time.

division 1Bill was taking on Steve Bracey who's a dangerous player to have on board 8! I'm told that he's graded 170+ in the Derbyshire league.  Chesterfield certainly batted all the way down the order.  Anyway Bill dId very well.  He can't be used to defending himself when he plays the Dutch but he had to surrender in the end after a tricky ending (see the game).  So in the end it all turned on one game-Srini v. Steve Housley.  Dave Latham calls it coffee house chess in his report.  Well there certainly were pieces flying all over the place.  White (Srini) attacking on the kingside with a Saemisch Attack against the King's Indian and Black steaming down the other flank.  Srini did have the upper hand at first but it was very wild and Black had a lot of play for the piece that White eventually won.  Very difficult to play under the present time limit.  Although he lost, I don't think that our man has anything to blame himself for at all.  Do look at the game.  The notes are Srini's.  It was a very close match, played in a very good spirit.

The Return to the land of the Snooker table.

Woodseats A v. Ecclesall A or the return to the land of the Snooker table.

It was a return to familiar surroundings, the  climb up the back stairs and then the room that had once been the centre of Sheffield Chess! An old friend was still occupying most of the available space-well that's a bit of an exaggeration. However the snooker table was still in residence but the chess sets were laid out and waiting when we arrived.  The reception was very friendly and there was time to ' catch-up' before the action started.
Amazingly Andrew against Dave Adams was the first to finish.  I don't know what happened because I was too busy exchanging pieces.  However the Ecclesall player had a rather  gratified expression on his face so I suspect that he had pulled off some tactical wheeze or other based on  craft and guile accumulated over the years...resulting in Andrew's granting him a draw.  A few minutes later my own opponent offered me a draw...and I thought why not?  I certainly wasn't winning.  Bill quickly realised that we were using new tactics tonight and got into the swing of things and also concluded hostilities with his opponent.  First lull them into a sense of false security and then pounce!  We didn't pounce quite yet because John, in spite of his excellent result in the recent Major Open on the Isle of Man (of which more later, I hope-we are promised at least a game) couldn't overcome the resistance of a well-prepared opponent who played very carefully.  All level and it was left to Allan, Paul and Mark to make the final assault.  Mark, with black, played aggressively and put a lot of pressure on his opponent who, understandably, finally cracked under time pressure and allowed a fatal check.  Allan had black in a Najdorf Sicilan.  His opponent adopted the positional approach with Be2 but went astray in the middle game and Black finished the game nicely.  With two wins in the bag, Paul, after striving hard to extract the maximum from his position, agreed a draw in, what seemed to be, a level position. Final score 5-3 to Woodseats!
