Ouch! is I suppose one possible reaction to this.  However, having read the sport pages of various quality newspapers for a number of years, my second reaction is that we can take a lot of positives away from this encounter!?  We got a very generous write up from Dave Latham on the Chesterfield site.  I really don't understand how he could manage very nearly to  beat Andrew and, also, keep an eye on everybody else's games.  I can't think of very much to add to what he says in his report, except to say that George's expression on meeting the Woodseats variation (I suspect for the first time) was a study to watch-almost as good as the youtube clip of Kasparov nearly falling off his chair playing Anand a very long time ago. It's worth searching for, if you've never seen it.  After having fought , nobly, but in vain against Martin Howard's English Opening when we played Chesterfield the other week, I thought Mark was a trife unlucky to come up against Andy Mort.  They play exactly the same openings!  Paul played very nobly for the team in turning down a draw, after the bottom boards had gone down.  I was a bit worried when my opponent said 'tasty' after I had made what I thought, for a while, was a good move.  I didn't know whether he wanted to eat me or play chess against me.  It could have worse but it could have been closer.  I missed chances of at least a draw and I'm sure there were similar opportunities on other boards.  So, the room was warm again this week, perhaps we ought to go back to being cold. Better for the intellect and all that stuff!  The match was played in an excellent spirit and the best team won.  Merry Christmas!
