2024/25 Winter Leagues – October Round-up

For the 2024/25 Winter season, Woodseats Chess Club are fielding four teams across the Sheffield & District Chess Association’s five divisions.

  • Woodseats A team – Division 1
  • Woodseats B team – Division 3
  • Woodseats C team – Division 4
  • Woodseats D team – Division 5

It’s been a busy month, with 5 matches completed in both the Winter Leagues and the Richardson Cup. Here is how the club fared…

Woodseats 1 team – October results

14th October 2024Woodseats 12.5 - 3.5Sheffield Nomads 1

Sheffield Nomads came to fight in the Richardson cup this month. Fielding three 2000+ rated players on the top boards, Sheffield Nomads were the heavy favourites. However, Woodseats 1 put up a valiant effort to tie the match at 2.5 – 2.5 with one board left playing. Unfortunately, the Woodseats team lost the edge in a frantic time scramble that gave Nomads the win they needed to advance to the next round of the Richardson Cup.

21st October 2024Woodseats A2 - 4Sheffield Nomads A

Only a week after their defeat to the Nomads in the Richardson Cup, the Woodseats A team had the chance to exact their revenge. Somehow, Sheffield Nomads managed to field an even stronger team than the week before, outrating Woodseats by at least 200 points on four out of the six playing boards. The defeat is therefore unsurprising, but nonetheless, Woodseats put up a good fight to draw the top two boards, and to score a fantastic win on Board 4.

Woodseats B team – October results

22nd October 2024Barnsley B3 - 3Woodseats B

Due to an issue with the playing venue, the Woodseats B vs Chesterfield C match did not take place. Later in the month, the Woodseats B team played away against Barnsley, which ended in an exciting 3 – 3 draw. As seems to be the pattern with Woodseats fixtures this month, Barnsely outrated Woodseats on every board. The two wins, two draws and two losses is therefore very well deserved.

Woodseats C team – October results

21st October 2024Woodseats C5 - 1Barnsley C
28th October 2024Woodseats C3 - 3Darnall & Handsworth C

It’s fair to say that the Woodseats C team annihilated the Barnsley C team on their visit to the Abbey. Again, Woodseats were outrated on every board except Board 6, and so achieving four wins, two draws and no losses is the highlight score of the month. A week later, a fresh C team that only featured one of the players from the previous week’s success, drew 3 – 3 against Darnall & Handsworth. Whilst still an excellent result in an evenly-matched lineup, this might be considered “one that got away”, as at least two of the boards couldn’t convert substantial advantages into a win.

October 2024 – tactics highlight

Here are two tactics that has been shared by Woodseats players this month.

Woodseats 1 vs Sheffield Nomads 1. Black (Woodseats 1, 1505) to move and win one of white’s (Sheffield Nomads 1, 1663) pawns.

The following position, from Woodseats C vs Darnall & Handsworth C, was a missed win for Woodseats. What is the general plan for white (Woodseats C, 1582) to convert this +5 position into a victory over black (Darnall & Handsworth C, 1598)?
